Sloppy Joes:

  • 46 allergy friendly Hamburger Buns (we like using Schar brand)
  • 1 lb. 80-90% Lean Ground Beef
  • 1/2 onion, diced into small pieces

Sauce:

  • 3/4 cup ketchup 
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste + 1/4 cup water 
  • 1 Tbsp mustard
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp cider vinegar

Seasonings:

  • 4 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook the Meat:
    In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and 1/2 onion. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through (about 6-8 minutes). Drain excess fat, if very oily.
  2. Make the Sauce:
    Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, cumin, and garlic powder. Mix well to combine everything.
  3. Simmer:
    Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Toast the Buns (Optional):
    For extra flavor, toast the hamburger buns lightly in a pan or toaster.
  5. Assemble and Serve:
    Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Top with the other halves and serve warm.
