Ingredients
Scale
Sloppy Joes:
- 4–6 allergy friendly Hamburger Buns (we like using Schar brand)
- 1 lb. 80-90% Lean Ground Beef
- 1/2 onion, diced into small pieces
Sauce:
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup tomato paste + 1/4 cup water
- 1 Tbsp mustard
- 2 1/2 Tbsp cider vinegar
Seasonings:
- 4 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
Instructions
- Cook the Meat:
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and 1/2 onion. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through (about 6-8 minutes). Drain excess fat, if very oily. - Make the Sauce:
Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, cumin, and garlic powder. Mix well to combine everything. - Simmer:
Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt and pepper to taste. - Toast the Buns (Optional):
For extra flavor, toast the hamburger buns lightly in a pan or toaster. - Assemble and Serve:
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Top with the other halves and serve warm.
