Vegan Candy Corn

When I finally made these for Halloween, I was so excited and nostalgic of my teenage years with friends, eating way too many of these. This recipe will no doubt be a hit! It’s worth the time spent making it!

History of Vegan Candy Corn

Candy corn is one of the first candies to layer three different colors onto each other. And what’s funny is its name used to be called “chicken feed” to appeal to customers influenced by an agricultural way of life.

Nowadays, candy corn is less agriculturally sensitive and is made in big factories all around the world. I really nerded out by watching a video on how factories make these. You can watch it here too! And If you want to find out more about the history of candy corn, here is where I found my information!

Ingredients & Substitutes
  • sugar.
  • corn syrup. You can use agave too if corn is an issue!
  • Vegan butter alternative.
  • vanilla extract
  • powdered sugar. Use powdered sugar that contains tapioca starch if corn starch is an issue for you.
  • cornstarch. You can also use arrowroot powder if corn is an issue.
  • salt.
  • orange and yellow food coloring.
How to Make Vegan Candy Corn
  • Mix powdered sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Set aside.
  • Bring sugar, corn syrup, and butter alternative, to boil over high heat.
  • Reduce to medium and boil 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mixture should reach soft ball stage (230 degrees F) but shouldn’t cook any longer.
  • Remove from heat, add vanilla, then dry ingredients, and stir to combine.
  • Let stand until cool enough to handle, but still slightly warm (approximately 15 minutes).
  • Divide into 3 equal pieces and knead yellow food coloring into one, while kneading orange food coloring into the other.
  • Separate each ball of dough into 4 equal pieces.
  • Recruit 3 little helpers to each handle one set of dough balls (keep the 4th for yourself).
  • For each set, roll each piece into equal length ropes and lay out on wax paper (orange in the middle, white and yellow on the outside edges).
  • Flatten and press the ropes together with a rolling pin.
  • Using a table knife or flat edge of a spatula, cut each piece at alternating angles.
  • Smooth out edges of each piece and allow to cool completely.
Common Questions
  1. What do I do if my dough balls begin to dry out? Just add a sprinkle of water and fold dough ball, till it becomes less dry. You don’t want it to become sticky, but you don’t want it to be dry enough to begin cracking. Pliable and moist is what you’re looking for.
