Apple Cider Powder Mix

Thereโ€™s something quite special about apple cider. It always reminds me that fall and winter season are here. Itโ€™s sweet aroma, and itโ€™s warmth make me want to curl up with a blanket and sit next to a fire. I love that this mix has less preservatives than the store-bought mixes and it can be very versatile depending on which juice you pair it with! Apple and cranberry can be very tasty! So can sangria wine! Have fun experimenting with your favorite juices and let me know how it turns out in the comments below!

History of Apple Cider Powder Mix

The history of apple cider goes back thousands of years and spans multiple cultures around the world. In fact, historians believe cider originated in ancient civilizations of the Near East, where early people began fermenting apple juice into a drink. Over time, this practice spread to the Greeks and Romans, who both enjoyed similar fermented beverages made from apples. (Excellent Cork)

As apples traveled along trade routes like the Silk Road and into Europe, cider became especially popular in regions like France, Spain, and England. By the Middle Ages, cider was a staple drink in many parts of Europe, particularly in areas where grapes were harder to grow. Eventually, European settlers brought apple seeds and cider-making traditions with them to North America. In early American history, cider was incredibly common because it was easy to produce, stored well, and provided a safe alternative to water. (ASME)

Interestingly, many of the apples grown in early America were not meant for eating fresh. Instead, they were specifically cultivated for making cider because of their higher sugar content and bold flavor. Over time, cider evolved into many forms, including fresh (non-alcoholic) apple cider, hard cider, and even concentrated versions like boiled cider used for cooking and preserving. (Wikipedia)

Today, apple cider continues to be a beloved fall tradition, especially in the United States. While fresh cider is often enjoyed warm with spices, modern recipesโ€”like apple cider powder mixesโ€”are inspired by historical preservation methods that allowed people to enjoy apple flavor year-round. These powdered mixes are a convenient, shelf-stable twist on a drink with deep roots in history.

How to Make Apple Cider Powder Mix

To make this classic homemade apple cider mix, begin by combining
4 cups of sugar with 4 tablespoons of ground cinnamon1/2 tablespoon of ground nutmeg, and 1/2 tablespoon of ground cloves in a large mixing bowl. For a brighter citrus note, you can also whisk in 2 to 4 tablespoons of dried orange peel. Stir the ingredients thoroughly until the spices are evenly distributed and the mixture is a uniform color, then pour it into an airtight container or a mason jar for storage. When you’re ready to serve, stir 1 to 2 tablespoons of the powder into a quart of warmed apple juice, cranberry juice, or even wine, and enjoy!

Common Questions
  • How long will this mix stay fresh? Since itโ€™s made of dry ingredients, it will stay flavorful for about 6 to 12 months if stored in an airtight jar in a cool, dark place.
  • Can I use brown sugar instead of white?Absolutely! Brown sugar adds a deeper, molasses-like flavor. Just be aware it can clump more easily, so youโ€™ll want to pack it firmly or use a desiccant pack.
  • Does this dissolve completely? The sugar will dissolve, but the ground spices (cinnamon, cloves, etc.) do not dissolve in liquid. Youโ€™ll see a bit of spice “silt” at the bottom of your mug, which is totally normal for a natural mix!
  • Can I use this for hot water instead of juice? You can, but since the base of the recipe is spiced sugar, it will taste like “spice water.” Itโ€™s best used as a flavor booster for existing juices or wine.
  • Is this mix vegan/gluten-free? Yes! As long as your sugar and spices haven’t been processed with additives, this recipe is naturally vegan and gluten-free.
  • What is the best way to prevent clumping? If you live in a humid area, adding a food-safe silica gel packet or a small piece of a terracotta “sugar saver” to the jar can help keep the powder free-flowing.
