Ingredients & Substitutes
  • Diced Tomatoes. Use the whole can undrained. You can also use 4 fresh tomatoes with 1 cup water per large tomato. And to make this marinara extra creamy, you can use coconut milk or plant based heavy whipping cream.
  • Fresh basil, chopped, OR 2 dried basil. Fresh is always best in flavor but both will do just fine!
  • oregano. This gives you the classic marinara taste you’re looking for!
  • garlic.
  • onion powder.
  • salt.
  • pepper.
  • red pepper flakes. For a spicy flair, add more red pepper flakes to this recipe! It will taste amazing!
  • Follow your heart Parmesan flakes, for topping (optional). I love using this when making homemade pastas!
How to Make Homemade Marinara?

I like to make marinara the easiest way possible. Instead of cooking it, I simply toss the spices, tomatoes, and sometimes plant based cream into a jar. I then use an immersion blender to make the sauce chunky and smooth. Regular blenders will work for this too, but I find it easier to get the right consistency using an immersion blender. Also, using an immersion blender is way easier on the cleanup. Then it’s ready to use for all your amazing pasta, pizza, and casserole recipes!

Common Questions
  1. Can I use fresh tomatoes instead of canned diced tomatoes? Yes, you can use 4 fresh tomatoes with 1 cup water per large tomato. And to make this marinara extra creamy, you can use coconut milk or plant based heavy whipping cream.
