Mulled Apple Cider

Allergy Friendly Mulled Apple Cider reminds me of frosty nights & winter snow. Warmed apple cider flavored with sweet cinnamon, maple syrup, clove, and allspice and hints of lemon and orange. This classy drink will be sure to warm you up on a cool evening and have you wanting just one more glass. I recommend making a double batch so that there is enough mulled cider to go around.

History of Apple Cider

Apple cider has been documented to have been made throughout Germany, England, Scandinavia, and America for many years. During Apple harvest season, many of these countries began to make apple cider and celebrate with various traditions! Today, most of us still celebrate the change of seasons and the cool weather with a hot glass of cider. I love how traditions like apple ciders keep going, even still!

If you want to find out more about the history of Mulled Apple Cider, here is where I found my information!

Ingredients & Substitutes
  • whole cinnamon sticks. For a fresh and spicy sweetness
  • ground cloves. Robust warm flavoring
  • whole allspice berries. Peppery and savory
  • orange peel. For a slight tang.
  • lemon peel. Slightly tangy
  • maple syrup. To add richness to the flavors and hint of sweet.
  • apple cider OR apple juice. Although apple cider will have a more complex flavor profile, apple juice is still super yummy once mulled.
  • dark rum, optional. If making for adults, either put this in at the beginning or leave it out for people to make their own cocktails! Other good adult options are: bourbon or whiskey.
Pro Tips
  • Pick a quality cider! Quality cider = quality mulled cider! The best apple ciders will be cloudy and are found in the refrigerator section at the grocery store. Do not buy sparkling cider or hard cider as these both will not work in this recipe.
How to Make Mulled Apple Cider

Making Allergy Friendly Mulled Apple Cider is very easy! In a medium saucepan, place the cinnamon sticks, ground cloves, allspice berries, orange peel, and lemon peel. Pour in the maple syrup and apple cider or homemade apple juice.

Bring almost to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and serve in mugs with apple slices and orange twists. Add a splash of rum for an adults-only version.

Common Questions
  1. How long does mulled apple cider last?Cider doesn’t last super long because of the fresh fruits. Even after straining the fruit out of the drinks, the cider will only last about 3 days in the fridge. After that it needs to be used up or placed in the freezer up to 4 months.
  2. How do you reheat mulled cider?
I recommend reheating a large batch of cider on the stove. But if you’re just reheating your cup, a quick 45-60 seconds in your microwave will work wonders.
  3. Can I add in rum for an adult cider?
If using rum, please do some research to make sure it is free from all allergens that you are allergic to. Rum is made of sugarcane but different brands flavor their rum with nuts. Here is a site to help you start to understand allergies and alcoholic beverages.
